Description and Provenance (K11785) Autograph letter signed by the former slave of Alexander Hamilton Stephnes, ex-Vice President of the Confederacy. 4 pages, 8vo, on single folded sheet with small blind-embossed capitol on upper left corner of first page. Crawfordsville, GA, 14 January 1883. Eliza was the former slave of Confederate Vice President Stephens. She complains that she is being cheated on by a man who was attending to her "dray" business. Stephens was known for caring for his ex-slaves. A jotted notation at the end of the letter hints that some sort of stipend may have been given to Eliza.
